Past Program Highlights
The 2025 TMU Winter Program
This program spanned three weeks in January at TMU’s Minami-Osawa Campus. Nineteen students from twelve universities across eight countries participated to learn Japanese language and culture under the theme “Dō (道): The Art of Japanese Language & Culture.”
Japanese Language Class
Students were divided into two classes based on their language proficiency levels to learn practical Japanese. They learned essential Japanese for travel and daily life, such as how to describe themselves and their surroundings.

Field Studies
At the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts, students viewed authentic woodblock prints of Ukiyo-e from the museum’s collection and attended a lecture on the history and evolution of Ukiyo-e prints. They also visited special exhibitions “Junior high School: Art”, “New Acquisitions 2023-2024”, and “Japanese Creative Prints in 1910s”, where they learned how to appreciate modern artworks.

For the second visit, we went to Nishikawa Koryuza in Takao and watched performances of “Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo”, which has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

In another lecture, “Tradition Meets Innovation: Incorporating Dō Culture into Today’s Corporations,” they learned about the application of Dō principles in modern society, including its strengths and weaknesses.

Final Presentation
Students selected a specific perspective from topics discussed in Japanese language classes, lectures on Japanese culture, or cultural experiences. Then, they created presentation materials and gave a presentation on what they discovered and learned.
