Japanese government [MEXT] scholarships
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) administers a Japanese government scholarship
program for international students in order to provide outstanding international students with opportunities to study in
Japan.
There are two ways to apply for the scholarships: embassy recommendation, and university recommendation. Note that there are very few slots available in all three categories, and selection processes are very competitive. For detailed application guidelines, please refer to the MEXT website.

Applicants submit applications to the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country, and undergo a preliminary
screening (written test and interview). After passing, applicants must obtain a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from Tokyo
Metropolitan University (TMU). Selection as a Japanese government scholarship student is determined after a final
screening by MEXT. For details, click here.
(2)University Recommendation
International research students (graduate school level)
Around Dec. Applications are accepted, through TMU teaching staff, from overseas universities with which TMU has a
partnership agreement or a prior history of exchange. TMU screens the applications and recommends selected applicants to
MEXT.
