■What is Comprehensive Renters’ Insurance for International Students?

A guarantor is often required when renting a room in Japan. Normally, Japanese people ask their relatives or others close to them to become guarantors. For international students who do not have this option, the International Center can serve as the guarantor if the student enrolls in the Comprehensive Renters’ Insurance for International Students system. (Privately financed research students and other nonregular students are not eligible for this insurance.) For details, please refer to this pamphlet.
Note: Depending on the room you wish to rent or the real estate company, you may not be able to use this system. In that case, please negotiate directly with the real estate company and follow their directions.

■Applying for the System

Check with your real estate company first to see if they allow the use of Comprehensive Renters’ Insurance for International Students. If they do, the International Affairs Office will accept your application.
