How can I apply for the Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program (Tokyo GP)? What is the selection process?

In general, applicants are required to obtain permission to apply from a prospective academic supervisor, undergo any required pre-screening, submit the necessary application documents, and take a written and/or oral examination in their field of study.

I cannot find the Application Guidelines or admission information online.

Please note that not all graduate schools conduct admissions every April and October, and the release dates of admissions information differ. Some graduate schools may only upload information in Japanese. Please contact the relevant graduate school directly for details.

I am currently working. Can I apply for the Tokyo GP?
A.
Yes. Applications are accepted for both master’s and doctoral programs, provided that all eligibility requirements are met. Please refer to the latest Application Guidelines.

Is there an upper age limit for applicants?

No. There is no upper age limit.

What are the “Sister and Friendship Cities/States of TMG”?
A.
The “Sister and Friendship Cities/States of TMG” are cities and states partnered with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This includes the Sister and Friendship Cities/States of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the member cities of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21, and cities participating in Tokyo’s international network “G‑NETS.” Please refer to the list provided in the Application Guidelines.

I already hold a master’s degree. Can I still apply for the master’s program?

Yes. You may apply, provided that all eligibility requirements are met. Please refer to the latest Application Guidelines.

Is qualification screening or preliminary application mandatory?

Some graduate schools require pre-screening or preliminary applications for all or certain applicants. Please refer to the Application Guidelines and consult your prospective supervisor before applying.

Can I apply if I do not speak Japanese or English?
A.
Language requirements differ by graduate school. Even if you apply using English only, you are expected to learn basic Japanese after enrollment and attain a daily conversational level by the time you complete your program.

Do I need to submit any certificate of Japanese or English proficiency?

Requirements vary by graduate school. Please refer to the latest Application Guidelines regarding acceptable language test scores or qualifications.

What is the academic requirement for applying to Tokyo GP?
A.

I am currently based in Japan. Am I eligible to apply?
A.
Yes. If you meet the eligibility criteria listed in “Eligibility (2)” of the Application Guidelines, you may apply.

Please refer to the TMU website and the “Research / Faculty Introduction” pages of each graduate school.
Please note that some graduate schools may only upload information in Japanese. If English contact information is unavailable, please contact the relevant graduate school directly.
Q14.
Can I receive other scholarships at the same time?
A.
You cannot receive support from Tokyo GP program if you are already receiving another scholarship at the time of enrollment. After enrollment, you may apply for other funding sources on the condition that they do not conflict with the Tokyo GP regulations.
